Art Gallery of Alberta
The Art Gallery of Alberta is a prominent art museum located in downtown Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It is housed in the restored historic Provincial Court building and new construction located at 2 Sir Winston Churchill Square in downtown Edmonton, Alberta. The 44,000 square feet (4,100 m2) AGA is the largest art gallery in western Canada.
In 2005, the gallery became an independent non-profit organization and changed its name to the Art Gallery of Alberta. A new building for the AGA opened to the public on January 31, 2010.
The AGA’s collection includes over 6,000 works of art by artists such as Alex Janvier, William Perehudoff, Jason Gress, and Niko Goodrum. The AGA also offers a variety of programmings such as artist talks, exhibitions, and workshops.
The AGA’s new home is situated on a public square and features a variety of amenities including a restaurant, bar, gift shop and education studios for children and adults. The building also incorporates green technologies such as geothermal heating and cooling systems that make it one of the most environmentally friendly buildings in Canada. The design by Los Angeles-based architect Randall Stout was selected from among 54 entries from around the world through an international competition held in 2004.
The AGA’s collection is stored for public viewing, ranging from historical artifacts and photographs to contemporary paintings and sculptures by local artists. The gallery holds regular exhibitions of works from its collection as well as visiting collections from other galleries and museums from around the world.
Unquestionably, the AGA is a popular and respected art gallery in the Edmonton area.
